New HSK 2012-13 Graphs
These were created, using a script written in Python, from the latest 2012 word lists that can be found in the CSV file at the bottom of this page on the official HSK website.
Some graphs show just a single (New) HSK Level, and some show multiple levels. Some charts show which characters are common across different words, and some show character composition.

Print-Ready Images
These images are stored in PNG (portable network graphic) format and are quite large: they should look good at sizes up to about a metre (or 3 feet) square. PNGs are a bit like JPEGs except they retain the crisp clean lines of the original image without any fuzzy JPEG artifacts. All of these images include pinyin:
- HSK Level 1 Character Composition: simplified characters with pinyin (3.7MB)
- HSK Level 1 Words: simplified characters with pinyin (2.4MB)
- HSK Level 1 to 2 Words: simplified characters with pinyin (2.9MB)
- HSK Level 1 to 3 Words: simplified characters with pinyin (4.3MB)
- HSK Level 1 to 6 Words : simplified characters with pinyin (18MB)
- HSK Level 1 to 6 Words split into 4 images for easy printing: Top Left, Top Right, Bottom Left, Bottom Right
Vector Images
These files are in SVG (scalable vector graphic) format, and they are smaller in size than the PNG versions. They will print out at much higher resolutions without looking 'blocky'. There are different versions of each image with and without pinyin, and with simplified and traditional characters. I haven't had time to make PNGs of all of these different variations yet; you could produce your own PNG versions from these files using Adobe Illustrator or a free program such as Inkscape. The images that I have called "Word Star" don't have any connections between the words; they are simply arranged in a circle with the most frequent words closer to the centre.
- HSK Level 1 Character Composition: simplified characters, simplified with pinyin, traditional, traditional with pinyin
- HSK Level 1 Words: simplified characters, simplified with pinyin, traditional, traditional with pinyin
- HSK Level 1 to 2 Words: simplified characters, simplified with pinyin, traditional, traditional with pinyin
- HSK Level 1 to 3 Words: simplified characters, simplified with pinyin, traditional, traditional with pinyin
- HSK Level 1 to 4 Words : simplified characters, simplified with pinyin, traditional, traditional with pinyin
- HSK Level 1 to 6 Word Star : simplified characters, simplified with pinyin, traditional, traditional with pinyin
Gephi Graph Files
These files contain the connected nodes and edges that were used to generate all of the other charts. You can view and filter the data in different ways, and apply different algorithms to determine how the nodes should be laid out. To use these files you will need to download a copy of the free graph visualisation program Gephi. These files are all in simplified characters without pinyin; I output an SVG from Gephi and use a Python script to add pinyin to the SVG and convert the SVG to traditional characters (email me if you need to do this). Note that some of the files look a real mess if they are not filtered, such as those with connections between all words and characters for levels 1 to 6.
- HSK Level 1 Character Composition: simplified characters
- HSK Level 1 Words: simplified characters
- HSK Level 1 to 2 Words: simplified characters
- HSK Level 1 to 3 Words: simplified characters
- HSK Level 1 to 4 Words : simplified characters
- HSK Level 1 to 6 Character Composition : simplified characters
- HSK Level 1 to 6 Words: simplified characters
- HSK Level 1 to 6 Word Star : simplified characters
HSK 2010 Graphs
My first attempts at creating HSK graphs used older 2010 HSK word lists. Most were generated using the free package Graphviz. There are advantages and disadvantages to using Graphviz over Gephi; but on the whole it is harder to generate and tweak large graphs with Graphviz; a lot more cleaning up had to be done by hand in Illustrator. These images are kept here as someone else may find them useful.
